Transactional Activism: Czech Advocacy Organizations in Comparative Perspective

2018 - 2023
Provider Czech Science Foundation
Programme Standard projects
Project code 18-18760S
Participants Faculty of Social Sciences Charles University

Transactional activism is distinct from individual participation as it operates at the level of organizations. How widespread is transactional activism in the Czech advocacy sector? Is it specific to new post-communist democracies or does it resemble the structure and dynamics among advocacy organizations in “old” Western democracies? Do “organizational transactions” promote certain forms of political advocacy, and what is this effect in other countries? Can transactional activism compensate for the lack of grassroots involvement and promote political activism of advocacy organizations? Does context affect its role? Available scholarship has so far offered only limited answers to those questions and more robust comparative empirical evidence is lacking. The goal of the project is to collect and analyze original data on Czech advocacy sector within the international project Comparative Interest Group Survey (CIG Survey) to enable systematic cross-country comparisons.
