Integrating Text & Literacy Research (InT&L)

2020 - 2024

Programme Primus
Project code PRIMUS/20/HUM/005
Participants Faculty of Arts Charles University (since 2023 coordinator), Faculty of Social Sciences Charles University

We will form a unique exploratory group that will integrate text-analytical methods (quantitative, qualitative; desk- and lab-based) with field studies of reading in natural settings (e.g. schools). Such fusion will strongly advance the understanding of literacy as an interface of text, reader, and the reader’s environment (peers, teachers). Our first 2 projects (P1-2) will focus on the embodied dimensions of story literacy in ages 7–11. P1 will proceed text→reading. We will develop a coding method for in-text embodiment (action verbs, metaphors etc.), apply it on school reading materials, and conduct video-assisted field research in classrooms to study how in-text embodiment translates into lived embodiment (sensorimotor imagery) as manifest in verbal and nonverbal (gesture) behaviour. P2 will proceed reading→text. We will interview children on their experiences of the varied texts they meet in and out of school, then code recordings and transcripts for embodiment markers, align them with key texts, and refine in-text code. We will synthesize P1–2 in milestone reports on embodiment in children’s complex literate lives, liaise with educational stakeholders, and bid for EU funding.
