Participants Faculty of Social Sciences Charles University

Digital and online media have been reshaping civic and political engagement, providing those with limited political rights new opportunities to represent their voice and participate. This research focuses on the complex and potentially contrasting role online media play in social construction, negotiation, and practice of children’s active citizenship. The mixed methods research has four phases; (1) the qualitative content analyses identifying online discursive practices of both the media and general public related to minors’ citizenship followed by (2) quantitative analyses measuring the prevalence of main discursive characteristics, (3) Q methodology with Q sort interviews exploring minors’ (age 9-17) perception of active citizenship and the role of online media in it, and (4) data synthesis and comparison of minors and adults’ views on, and attitudes towards, children’s active citizenship involving online media. Ultimately, new knowledge about the contextual role of multifaceted online media uses in minors’ potential inclusion in and exclusion from civic life will be developed.
