RISE (Research in Societal Extremism) establishes a pioneering research team dedicated to exploring the many dimensions of (violent) extremism. Our project delves into the ideologically embedded, culturally sanctioned, and digitally reinforced links between mainstream structures and extremism, termed Societal Extremism (SE). RISE aims to produce a new analytical lens for the field, focused on the complex, intertwined, and rapidly evolving relationships in and across extremist communities, bringing together accomplished researchers with different epistemological foci to achieve this. The team’s interdisciplinary research portfolio includes work on violent and non-violent aspects of extremism. Therefore, RISE bridges perspectives from multiple disciplines and areas of expertise to provide a more comprehensive understanding of SE and the characteristics that bridge contemporary extremist communities.
