Plurality of Memories in Europe in a Global Perspective

Provider Charles University
Programme 4EU+ minigrant
Project code 4EU+/23/F2/13
Participants Faculty of Social Sciences Charles University (coordinator), Heidelberg University, Sorbonne University, University of Copenhagen, University of Milan, University of Warsaw

The project focuses on promoting a transnational approach to the multicultural plurality of memories in Europe in general, and memory conflict in Central and Eastern Europe in particular. We explore multiple dimensions of the narratives of the past and present and view them in the context of national and transnational actions both within and beyond Europe. Our goal is to promote transnational and inclusive public history and collective memory, which is a crucial component of building a tolerant community of people and nations.
In terms of implementation, as Charles University has become the leading partner within our consortium, we are further pursuing our long-term ambition to create a European pole of excellence in Memory Studies and to institutionalize the discipline of Memory and Public History Studies in the form of Ph.D. and M.A. study programs. Our effort is coming to a fruition with a 4EU+ Certificate of Memory Studies Excellence awarded for student participation from this academic year on. Continuing our common workshops, seminars, summer schools, conferences and online platform (mailing list/website) remain essential for building a broad research network of experts at this moment, joint teaching projects and mobility throughout the duration of the project are vital for the educational part.

Both of these pillars not only allow us to maintain the cohesion of our academic network but foster its further growth by attracting a new generation of memory studies scholars, non-academic professionals and activists who will shape the future of our societies.
